My name is Dawn Coates, and this is my first year at University Academy. I currently teach 7th grade World Geography.

I am originally from St. Joseph, MO, and I graduated from Missouri Western State University with a degree in Political Science. I worked in the criminal justice field for ten years, then returned to school to complete courses toward teacher certification. I have been an educator since 2002, and I have taught all grades 7-12, and nearly every Social Studies subject—and in two other states (Arkansas and Florida) and two other countries (the United Arab Emirates and Morocco). I returned to Missouri two years ago to make Kansas City my home. I am happily single with no kids, and have a precious kitty cat named Vino, whom I absolutely adore. I love to travel, and when I’m not working, I enjoy live music, attending sporting events, reading, listening to podcasts, and watching movies and documentaries. I also spend as much time as I can with my friends in Florida, because I love the beach and I’m an auntie to a four year old cute-but-little-stinker in Destin. I am a news junkie, and a fan of Kansas City Chiefs football, St Louis Cardinals baseball, and Kansas Jayhawks basketball (Rock Chalk Jayhawk!).

I consider teaching to be my calling, and Social Studies is my passion. I am a firm believer in providing my students with a classroom culture of respect and empathy. We are free to make mistakes as long as we learn from them, and we are safe from ridicule when we do make those mistakes. Along with World Geography, we learn to respect differences, appreciate diversity, and be conscious of how history has shaped our present. I strive to make my subject material interesting and relevant, and break down difficult concepts so that they are easier to grasp. It is my hope that my students leave my class not only academically prepared and successful, but also with an ability to think for themselves and an assurance of their worth and importance as individuals.
