Fifth Grade

In Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grades we will have a different format than last year.

Each week, one or two students will have the opportunity to report on and lead a class discussion about a current event that interests them. We will talk about reputable news resources and note language designed to influence our opinions.

Most weeks we will have a lesson with the goal of understanding "where things come from" and/or how does what I do have an effect on this or that situation.

Then students will be able to work independently or in small groups at various learning stations.  I especially enjoy the Highlights series Mathmania and Which Way USA and am making those challenges available to my students.

Other stations will include games and resources designed to increase students' abilities in their core subjects, problem solving, logical reasoning, spatial abilities, imaginations, and critical thinking.

For those students who want to learn more (and earn points toward a class store) I am providing independent work in geography, math, spelling, and language arts. We will have a short quiz each week on commonly confused words, geography questions, idioms, and mental math.

Fifth Grade will meet in the afternoon daily Mon-Thurs for 45 minutes.

Advanced Studies Behavior Plan 2017-18

Jackie DiPasquale, Instructor

I’m looking forward to a smooth school year, but just in case there are some bumps, here is the plan.

We are going to focus on ways to improve the dynamics in our class:

Taking turns contributing to the conversation

            Listening respectfully to each other

            Working cooperatively

            Paying attention to the teacher

            Being on task

            Accepting input and consequences calmly

            Being industrious

            Using “inside” voices

Being in Advanced Studies is viewed as a privilege given to few students. As such, students are held to a high standard.

This year, students have a daily activity sheet in which they will write their day’s goals and record what they did and learned during the class period. All students are responsible for the class’s overall learning.

I will be using Class Dojo to keep track of behavior this year.

We will try out a “store” of items that students can purchase with their points periodically.

In the event of serious behavior, I have a Safe Seat in the room this year and will send students from there to Mr. A’s room or Mrs. Slater’s room.

If necessary, I will be in touch with parents via email or phone.
