University Academy Families,

As we get closer to the end of the school year, I want to take a moment to give a few announcements and acknowledge the hard work that students, parents, and staff members have been putting in over the past six weeks during this unprecedented crisis.

1. Graduation   We have decided to hold graduation on Thursday, July 16th at 9:30am.   The ceremony will be in the football stadium.  We have made plans to ensure social distancing among students and families.  We will abide by whatever safety guidelines are in place at that time and will be conferring with city officials in advance.  The ceremony will be live streamed for those that cannot attend.   Upper School administration will be reaching out to seniors and their families with more detail about tickets and logistics.

2. Senior Awards and Retreat   The Class of 2020 will have a students-only award ceremony on Tuesday, July 14th, starting at 9am.  It will be followed by fun activities and catered lunch.  The awards will be live-streamed.

3. Summer School   We are in the process of deciding what our options will be for summer school.  Thank you to all the parents that participated in our poll via SchoolMint.   We are weighing an "in-person" summer school July 20 - Aug 7 vs a virtual summer school.  We are even considering offering both.   We expect to hear from the Mayor early next week with guidance that will be imperative to that decision and we'll get word out as soon as we can.

4.  Kudos   The vast majority of all UA students have been regularly turning in all their work and participating in learning activities.   We know this is happening because parents are actively monitoring and making sure students are staying on it.   Thank you, parents and guardians, for all the hard work you're putting in.  Many of us are also parents and we're dealing with the same struggles.   It is hard.   So, in advance of Mother's Day, I just want to say thank you to all the moms (and dads) for all you're doing.

5.  Teacher Kudos   Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week.   Please let them know how you feel.  I am so proud of our faculty.   They have stepped up and knocked it out of the park!   Some schools are simply printing up packets of worksheets and handing them out once a week.  That's not UA, as you know.   Our faculty would never stand for that.  We still want to teach and help students in any way we can.

6.  Student Services & Community Support Kudos   I also want to thank everyone on our team that is working hard to distribute school lunches, household goods, collecting donations, disseminating information on community resources, distributing laptops, and helping in any way they can.  We have been blessed to have received donations for families and the school from the following individuals and organizations:
  • Bush and Jamie Helzberg
  • SchoolSmartKC
  • Kanbe's Market
  • Community Action Agency
  • Erika and David Dickey
  • Murphy Charitable Trust
  • Urban Prevention
  • Missouri Department of Mental Health
  • First Call
  • Sgt. Carter (KCPD)
  • Webster House
  • United Inner City Services
