Plans for Continued Reopening

Plans for Continued Reopening

UA Parents and Guardians-

We continue to get new developments every day and we have to constantly be aware of our situation. This morning, the CDC altered it's official guidance to give schools more flexibility in terms of capacity and scheduling.  Specifically, the CDC is now recommending 3 ft spacing instead of 6 ft spacing between students.   According to the current CDC school opening guidance in regards to community transmission rates, schools within KCMO qualify for K-12 In-Person instruction as of today.

Here is the plan moving forward and it is important that you stay up to date on emails coming out from the LEA.

1. March 29th, K-5 students who chose In-Person instruction will start school at UA as planned.

2. On March 31st, we will review the most recent Covid 19 transmission data within KCMO and make a decision by April 2nd as to whether or not we decide to gear up for in-person instruction for grades 6-12 and additional Lower School students that may have changed their mind or missed the first deadline.    If transmission data suggests we should be in-person, we will begin the process of asking parents to sign up, via questionnaire, with a deadline of April 5th at midnight.    In-Person instruction for those additional students would begin April 19th.    UA will continue to look to the CDC for guidance on spacing, spacing, student capacity, masks and other mitigation strategies which may impact our schedules.  As a reminder, staff should get their second vaccine shot by April 12th.

3.  Families may still choose to remain in virtual classes through the end of the school year if they prefer.

4.  Challenges - We have many challenges to overcome to successfully reopen K-12.   First, we have to see how many students in each grade level choose In-Person, hence the April 5th deadline.   Then, we have to make schedule adjustments.   For 6-12, this will likely become a hybrid schedule depending on how many students sign up for In-Person.  Hybrid would be students on campus for 2 days per week for 6-12 students.  The master schedule will have to be completely rebuilt.   Fortunately, late April and early May features a lot of review and testing, so we think it can be done.  The new guidance from CDC (3 ft spacing) will make it a bit easier to accommodate, but we may have some scheduling challenges there, too.  I'm confident we'll be able to overcome those challenges and provide students with a positive last month of school.

Please continue to check your email daily and make sure you respond to any questionnaires sent out in a timely manner.
