Back to School Information

Parents and Guardians,

This email is designed to give you much anticipated and needed information in regards to the upcoming school year.   UA's first day of school is September 8th.   We will be in a virtual mode for at least the first quarter, which ends Oct. 23.    Below you will find information about device distribution, upcoming parent training, Meet the Teacher, daily schedules by grade level, and school nutrition.

We want to thank everyone who participated in virtual summer school and especially thank those who completed the survey at the completion of summer school.  Your feedback has helped us focus our efforts on areas of improvement and to fortify our areas of strength.   This year will be historically challenging, not just for UA, but for the world as a whole.  We feel very good about where we are right now.  We will have enough devices to meet the needs of individual students, not just families.   Our teachers have been working extremely hard to figure out how to best engage and challenge students virtually.

SCHOOLOGY - What is it?

Unlike the spring, we will be engaging in live teaching, referred to as synchronous instruction.   This is different from last spring, when most schools, including UA, were really only equipped and trained to post static lessons online.   We will be teaching a college prep program, complete with the high expectations you expect from UA.

The platform software that we will be using is called Schoology.  Schoology is where teachers will be teaching, posting assignments, and communicating with students.   We will be sending out detailed information on how to log into Schoology on September 1, and we will be hosting a live Q&A for parents on September 3.   For those of you whose students attended summer school, you are already pretty familiar with the process.  We will now add the parent component for fall.   Please check this new Virtual page on our website should you have any questions about Schoology, class schedules or anytime you don’t know where to turn.  This site will continually be updated with valuable parent information.

Virtual Learning Resources

Please take a few minutes to read the information below.  Over the coming days, we will be sending out more and more information that is particularly relevant to your individual student(s).

Devices

  • This year, we should be able to provide devices for each student.  K-1 students will be provided a tablet, while Grades 2-12 will use a Chromebook laptop.  If parents do not have internet, UA will work with the family to obtain a hotspot.  It should be noted that hotspots are not high-speed internet and do have limited monthly data.
  • However, if you already have a personal device for one or more of your students, we ask that you consider not checking out a UA device at this time.   While we are waiting for another shipment of computers, it would be possible we could run short if every student attempted to check out a UA device.
  • If you checked out a laptop last spring or this summer, and would like to continue to use that particular device, you do not need to do anything.   That agreement form will just continue to be in place until further notice.
  • If you checked out a laptop for summer school, and are now eligible to receive the incentive device for completing summer school, you will need to turn in the UA laptop at the time of receiving the new device.   The new laptops/tablets we ordered for the summer school completion incentive are due to arrive in mid-September.  We apologize for the delay.  Suppliers are having a difficult time filling orders this summer.  Please continue to use the device you currently have until the new ones arrive.
  • If you need a device for one or more of your students, we will be loaning out devices on Tuesday, September 1 at UA between Noon - 6:00pm.   You do not need an appointment.  Please bring your photo ID.    The devices will be distributed in a drive through line, as well as textbooks and materials that your student may need to pick up.

DATES TO NOTE FOR PARENTS

Tuesday, September 1

Noon - 6:00pm - We will be distributing devices, textbooks, work packets, and manipulatives in the UA parking lot.   Everything will be able to be picked up without having to get out of the car.   There will be a station for each grade level, as well as a technology checkout station (see Devices section above).

Free Pizza Incentive

We will be asking all parents to fill out the 2020-21 National School Lunch Program application.  This data is vital for our state reporting and school funding, even if you do not qualify.   All families that fill out a NSLP application will be given a free pizza, courtesy of Waldo's Pizza.

Schoology Parent Login Information Goes Out Via Email - all day.

Meet the Teacher virtually – Lower School

Meet the Teacher virtually – Middle School

·         The MS staff will be meeting virtually via Schoology as grade level teams and electives will be meeting as a team.  These meetings will be links listed for your students under "Resources" on their Schoology Dashboard.  Students will need to login to Schoology, click on 'Resources', then 'Groups' and 'School Resources’ and finally UA Middle School.  Then click on the link associated with their respective grade levels.  Teachers will start with introductions as a whole, then briefly review their course expectations, and be willing to stick around and answer any necessary questions.  Parents will have the option of emailing staff if they want to share personal or private information about their student's needs.
