Library goals are: Instill a love for books and reading, train analytical and fearless information seekers, and expand global awareness through literature and media.

Lisa Spellman, Librarian

Bio:  Lisa Spellman joined University Academy in January of 2009 as a Library Clerk.  She became the Library Media Specialist at the start of the 2013-14 school year.  Her degree is from the University of Nebraska at Kearney.  She loves to read realistic fiction, historical fiction and non-fiction, and Young Adult novels.

Bio: Mindy Ryan joined University Academy for the 2021-2022 academic year as the Library Clerk. Her previous position was at Kansas City Public Library. She has an undergraduate degree from the University of Arkansas and will earn her Masters in Library Science from Emporia State University in 2022. She loves to read historical fiction, mythology, and fairy tales!

Reading Incentives

  • Grades K-1 – Missouri Building Block Book Nominees - All of the titles are read to the students. Students will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite to help select this year's winner.
  • Grades 1-2 – Show-Me Reader Award Nominees - All of the titles are read to the students. Students will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite to help select this year's winner.
  • Grade 3 – Great Kids Can Read - Read four titles from the 2014-2015 KC3 nominee list and get a cupcake party with Mrs. Spellman! Students who read four of these books have the opportunity to vote on their favorite to help select this year's winner.
  • Grades 4-5 – Mark Twain Award Challenge – Students need to read four of these books to vote on their favorite book in February to help determine this year's winner.
  • Grades 6-8 – Truman Reading Award Nominees – Students are encouraged to read these award winning titles specifically for middle school students.
  • Grade 9-12 – Gateway Award Nominees – Students are encouraged to read these award winning titles specifically for high school students.
