I am pumped to be in my 6th year of teaching English and coaching HS football at UA. I am also the proud sponsor of the UA Louder Than a Bomb poetry slam club.
Prior to my time at UA, I provided one-on-one and group ACT/SAT Prep at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. I also spent time teaching in both Columbia, Missouri and Chicago, Illinois.
At home, I have a Shar Pei/Pitbull mix, Sherman, and a Boarder Collie/Corgi mix, Arthur, who keep me plenty busy. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, writing, playing basketball and golfing (despite my consistent struggle). When I can't be active, I'm glued to the TV watching the Chicago Cubs, Bulls, Bears, and Blackhawks. 
My education includes a B.A. in English education from the University of Missouri (M-I-Z Z-O-U). I am in the process of obtaining my masters degree in English.

Classroom Rules:

1. Students will respect one another and their teacher at all times.
Bullying and harassment will NOT be tolerated!
2. Students may not bring food, drinks, or electronic devices into the classroom.
3. Students must be in the classroom, in their seats, with all materials when the bell rings.
4. All school rules will be followed in the classroom.

Classroom Policies:

1. Get to class on time. Tardiness will not be accepted. You are tardy if you are not in the classroom, in your seat, with all needed materials, and beginning the bell work when the bell rings. Four tardies result in an office referral.
2. I expect that you to enter the room in an orderly fashion. Once you have arrived, please sit in your seat, take out your notebook, and do the opening activity that will be posted on the board. It may be Daily Oral Language, Vocabulary, or something related to the current unit.
3. You must be prepared for every class. I will provide some materials at the beginning of the year, but it is your responsibility to keep them, keep them in good condition, and bring them to every class.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A PEN AND/OR MECHANICAL PENCIL, HIGHLIGHTER(S), NOTEBOOK PAPER, CLASS TEXT, BINDER/FOLDER.
4. I also expect that you be quiet while someone else is speaking. Actively listening to one another is a big part of this class and falls under the number one rule: Respect one another.
5. I dismiss you, not the bell. Before you can leave my room, it must be clean and the desks must be in rows. Only then will you be dismissed. Do not get out of your seat for any reason during class time. Do not line up by the door.

Plagiarism:


Plagiarism is when you use someone else’s words, ideas, or theories as your own without giving the author/artist/creator proper credit. Always cite quotations or paraphrased material. Plagiarism is a serious offense. If you plagiarize something from a book, the internet, a friend, or any other source, you will receive a zero on the assignment, a student referral, five days of suspension, and your parent(s) will be notified immediately.
Late Work: Any work turned in after the due date is automatically deducted half-credit. Once a particular unit has come to a close, all assignments that were not turned in to the instructor will stay as a zero.

Extra-Credit:

Some extra-credit opportunities will spontaneously be given throughout the year. Take advantage of these opportunities.

Absences:

Most of our learning will take place in the classroom. Direct instruction, group work, and simulations are difficult to re-create, and so it is important that students attend class regularly. Much research has been done, revealing the positive correlations between student attendance and achievement. If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to get any assignments or information missed in class. Ask a classmate or find time outside of class or during a quiet work session to ask me what you have missed. You will be granted no more than the number of days absent to complete and turn in any missed work.

This will decide how successful our classroom is. I plan on creating a comfortable environment in which we can all contribute our questions and ideas as a group.
